Junction Point of River Ghizer & River Hunza

Junction Point of River Ghizer and River Hunza at Gilgit.

In the heart of Gilgit city, a remarkable natural confluence occurs where the river Ghizer  and river Hunza/Nagar meet to form the Gilgit river. This junction point is not only a geographical landmark but also holds cultural and strategic significance in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The river Ghizer, originating from the Shandur Pass and fed by the high-altitude streams of the Ghizer District, flows eastward. The river Hunza/Nagar, coming from the Hunza Valley and fed by glacial meltwaters from the Karakoram Range, flows southward. These two rivers converge near Gilgit town, creating a vivid and dramatic landscape where turquoise and silty glacial waters blend.

This confluence is a symbol of the interconnectedness of the region’s diverse valleys and cultures. It also plays a key role in the hydrology of the Indus River system, as the Gilgit River ultimately flows into the mighty Indus River downstream.

Haritage Museum Laspur Chiral Pakistan

A Brief History of Chitral Museum

The Chitral Museum was initiated by Mr. Shakeel Durrani, the Deputy Commissioner of Chitral in the 1980s. It became a proper museum in 2003. Two new galleries were inaugurated in 2010.

The museum has two major type of collections i.c. archacological artefacts and ethnological materials.

The first category mostly comprises grave goods un- carthed during the excavations conducted at Parwak and Singoor sites in Chitral by the Dircctorate of Archacology & and Museums, present Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa between 2003 and 2005. These archacological findings are generally attributed to the Indo Aryans and are dated to 1000 BCE.

The ethnological collection can be further classified into two major categories i.e. the Khow and the Kalasha. The inhabitants of upper Chitral are known as Khow as they speak the Khowar language, and their culture is known as Khow culture.

The Kalasha culture is attributed to the unique Kalasha people living in Bamborate, Birir and Rambur valleys. The museum curates a good collection of the Khow and Kalasha cultures, including dresses, jewelry, agricultural tools, weapons, religious and other household objects providing valuable information about the political, religious and socio-cultural history of both these ethnic groups Iiving side by side.
