Gupis fort was built by Kashmir imperial Service troops in 1894 at a time of strategic concern to the British. This Fort is only surviving fort of any type in Ghizer district and combines colonial and traditional architecture.
In main function was a strategic camp to accommodate troops on their way from Gilgit to Chitral and the passes leading to the Russian and Afghanistan borders in the wakhan. Therefore unlike other forts it is located on low ground sited near a stream. The fort with its 5 meter high walls has on diagonally opposite corners, two square towers and two round towers which rises two to three meters beyond the walls. Six pounder guns could be mounted on the round towers.
Inside the quadrangle compound the majority of barracks and stables are learn-to.
In the autumn of 1894, the explorer, geographer geopolitical analyst and later Viceroy (1899 - 1905) of india, George Nathaniel Curzon stayed for a few days in this fort.
