Khalti Lake, located in Ghizer District in the western part of Gilgit-Baltistan, is located at a distance of 120 km from Gilgit city. Spread over 98 acres, the lake is 80 feet deep. Located at an altitude of 7274 feet above sea level, Khalti Lake is 1510 feet wide and 7723 feet long.
According to locals, the Ghizer River stopped flowing for several days after the catastrophic floods in 1989, and 60 houses in Khalti village were flooded. A few days later, the present Khalti Lake came into existence on the low-lying area, which still exists today. Khalti Lake is home to trout fish. Thousands of domestic and foreign tourists come here in summer to see the lake and catch fish. In winter, the upper part of the lake freezes completely
